Highlights: Qualitative investigation of epistemic cognition models and measurement. Epistemic cognition should examine declarative, procedural, and principled knowledge. Domain differences in epistemic cognition imply differing models. Beliefs about authority are not reliable indicators of sophistication. Implications for survey development and research are discussed.
