The authors summarize the early roots of literacy prior to age 3, then review the skills developed in preschool that provide a foundation for reading in the primary grades. They identify literacy skills that are considered essential for children in kindergarten to third grade, propose a model of early literacy skills across preschool and the primary grades, and discuss classroom and child variables that influence literacy and reading skills. In addition, the authors present teaching strategies that promote mastery of literacy skills.
