The authors offer teachers research-based insights into English-language learners’ development of English reading and encourage teachers to work in ways that unleash the English-language learners’ full reading potential. The chapter is organized into four parts: a) A framework is presented for considering the impact of being a new language learner upon learning to read in the new language. b) A study is reported of first- through third-grade Latino students’ English reading growth. c) Implications of the findings of the study are discussed, especially with regard to classroom reading instruction for multilingual learners in a variety of settings. d) Guiding principles and illustrative classroom practices that emanate from the findings of the study are presented.
