NC DPI Critical Languages Initiative

Summary

LEARN NC will provide project management for the development of a program to bring critical language instruction to K-12 schools in North Carolina. The model, designed as part of concurrent Foreign Language Assistance Programs federal grant for the development of Mandarin Chinese online, includes an online course, an open-source online textbook, and the use of language coaches to instruct and assess learners.  LEARN NC also oversees pilot offerings of these courses by North Carolina Virtual Public School.  Based upon a statewide needs assessment survey, online high school courses in Arabic and Japanese will be developed.

Two professional development courses (Teaching World Languages Online and Virtual Mentoring for Chinese I instructors) will be developed for both future teachers of critical languages teaching online as well as teachers of critical languages teaching in the face-to-face classroom and using electronic resources to supplement their program. Course content and associated materials, all developed for open-source distribution, may eventually be used for a broader range of students.
