Teaching with North Carolina's Standards for English Language Learners

Project has been completed.

The purpose of this project is to extend the currently existing capacity for training educators about teaching with the revised English Language Development (ELD) standards. The courses, which will begin development in September 2008, will be hosted on LEARN NC’s Moodle server. The deliverables are:

  • A complete revision of the existing online course addressing teaching English Language Learners with the ELD standards (2008), incorporating newly-adopted World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA) standards. This course will address the mandate in Title III of No Child Left Behind requiring each State educational agency to provide technical assistance and construct professional development activities for subgrantees in Title III improvement.
  • 120 participants (grade level/content teachers of limited English proficient (LEP) students) will complete the course.
  • Course will be revised if necessary according to pilot evaluation data.
  • Evaluation will be conducted using the standard LEARN NC template.

The revised ELD Standards course:

  • Will be trimmed to 30 hours/3 CEUs (an estimated 5-6 weeks online).
  • Will utilize some existing materials (the developer will secure permissions to utilize existing videos).
  • Will meet NC standards for professional development and LEARN NC standards for online professional development.

Will prepare teachers to use the established standards to raise the academic achievement of LEP students to meet NC DPI’s annual measurable achievement objectives.
