Bio

Jim Veitch is a clinical assistant professor in the School of Education where he began teaching after receiving his doctorate from the School. Formerly he was a superintendent, principal, assistant principal and teacher in Massachusetts and Maine as well as in Athens, Greece and Guangzhou, People’s Republic of China. Veitch originally intended to return to overseas school administration but was inspired to remain at UNC-Chapel Hill by the possibility of preparing future principals and superintendents for the challenges of educational leadership.

Veitch’s main areas of interest and expertise are clinical supervision, the role of the administrator in promoting and influencing instructional growth, high school administration and site- and district-based politics. Most intriguing to him are the dedication and passion of educational leadership candidates who join a field that continues to experience political pressure and is constantly in the limelight – often negatively.

Veitch’s teaching embraces theoretical frameworks as well as solid emphases on the harsh realities of school administration. His primary goal is to assist in the preparation of a new generation of educational leaders who will succeed in realizing the dream of equity and excellence for all students.
