Bio

Stan Schainker, clinical associate professor of educational leadership, decided to become a superintendent of schools when he was 19. By age 33 with his goal met and a number of administrative positions behind him, he learned that the superintendency was not the leadership role that would allow him to make the type of professional contribution to which he was most committed. Asserting that training and encouragement directly impact leadership skills, he has devoted himself to helping others understand the realities of the positions to which they aspire and how to effect their leadership potential with or without holding high-level positions of responsibility within organizations.

As coordinator of the Off-Campus Master of School Administration Program, he prepares school administrators not only to exert leadership themselves, but also to develop the leadership of the teachers, staff members, parents and students with whom they work. Schainker is convinced that individuals must identify their own values, beliefs, assumptions, biases and priorities to minimize how the “stuff in their head” limits their decision-making. He believes that school leaders – at all levels – work in what Peter Vaill calls “permanent white water” and that in order to be effective, they need to learn to operate within the unpredictability and “messiness” of that world.
