Russ Rowlett is a professor of mathematics and education and director of the Center for Mathematics and Science Education, a position he has held since July 1987. As director, Rowlett designs and presents professional development programs for K-12 teachers throughout the area and state. He also supervises and supports the Mathematics and Science Education Network (MSEN) Pre-College Program, an enrichment program in mathematics and science that enrolls nearly 1,000 middle and high school students in the Durham and Chapel Hill areas. He has directed two major professional development projects sponsored by National Science Foundation grants, one for earth science teachers (1994-2000) and the other for middle school mathematics teachers (2001-06). Working to support and expand School of Education extension programs and mathematics education programs, he served as a cohort leader in the M.Ed. Program for Experienced Teachers and as program coordinator of the Carolina Cooperative Lateral Entry Program (currently the Carolina Online Lateral Entry Program). On campus, he works to build and maintain contacts between the School of Education and faculty of the mathematics and science departments, teaches required mathematics courses in undergraduate and graduate education programs and serves on doctoral committees in mathematics education. Rowlett has a major interest in the development of mathematics courses that present K-12 curriculum topics from an advanced perspective appropriate for teachers, particularly in the areas of geometry and discrete mathematics. He encourages the appropriate use of classroom technology, especially graphing calculators, and is interested in the history of measurement and units of measurement. In this area, he is the author of a popular Internet dictionary of units of measurement and of the chapter “Numbers and Symbols” in Science and Technical Writing: A Manual of Style. |
