Born in Hong Kong and raised in Beijing, Associate Professor Xue Lan Rong uses her personal and professional backgrounds to create a learning environment in which students gain knowledge, skills and civic values while exploring issues of social consciousness, international affairs and lifelong learning. Her 25-year career includes teaching, research, consultative and administrative experience in the United States and China, including six years as a K-12 literature, history and geography teacher in rural and urban areas of the People’s Republic of China. During her career, Rong has served in various capacities on the boards of the Annual Edition of Educational Research Methods, Journal of Research and Development in Education, Modern China Studies, European Journal of China Studies and Sociology of Education. As guest or co-editor, she contributed to national and international publications such as Education and Urban Society, Social Education, Modern China Studies and the Educational Encyclopedia for Chinese Child and Adolescent Psychology. She is the author of refereed articles published in journals such as the Harvard Educational Review, American Educational Research Journal, Urban Education, American Sociological Review, American Sociologist and Sociological Quarterly, as well as 14 book chapters. Rong first-authored Educating Immigrant Students published by Sage-Coward in 1998 and is currently working on another book, which is tentatively titled The Education of Immigrant Students and the U.S. Schools, with Judith Preissle of the University of Georgia. She is co-editor of The Education and Socialization of Asian-Pacific Americans to be published in 2006. A leader within the profession, Rong has served as the program chair of the Special Interest Group, Research on the Education of Asian and Pacific Americans, of the American Educational Research Association since 2005. She also has chaired the Research Committee for the National Council for Social Studies and served as a board member for the International Activity Committee. She has provided substantial services to the University, local schools and Chinese communities and various state educational and cultural agencies. |
