“Music education is not merely desirable, but essential, to the full development of every student. The primary values of MUSIC and music education overlap essential life values…The quality of individual and community depends on providing people with the knowings and the opportunities they require to make a life as well as a living.” – David J. Elliott

Bio

Mérida Negrete had a wide variety of teaching experiences before joining Carolina’s faculty, spanning middle school band to university music education. Now a clinical assistant professor of music education, she focuses her scholarly interests on music in the public schools: mentoring young music teachers and integrating music appreciation into performance-based courses. She is a member of the National Association for Music Education and the Society for Music Teacher Education, through which she investigates young music teacher mentoring practices in the United States. Active in the North Carolina Music Educators Association (NCMEA) Young Professionals Symposium, she helps identify and encourage future music educators. She is also a member-at-large of the NCMEA Higher Education Section.

Negrete serves as an evaluator of state college music education programs that are seeking accreditation from the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. She is the UNC-Chapel Hill Music Department coordinator of the state NCMEA conference presentations and is involved in outreach activities with state music educators and Carolina alumni. Advisor to the UNC Chapter of the Collegiate Music Educators National Conference (CMENC) Negrete recently hosted a campus mini-conference, “Music Education’s Expanding Horizons,” encouraging students to expand the variety of music-making formats in their curriculum. She has served on the board of the North Carolina Central District Bandmaster’s Association, has been involved in programs sponsored by the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching and is especially interested in developing the leadership potential of young women.

In addition to her duties as personnel manager for the North Carolina Wind Orchestra, Negrete performs with the group as well as with the UNC Music Department Newman Series, the Tar River Orchestra, the Raleigh Symphony and the Raleigh Civic Symphony. She has participated in the UNC Summer Chamber Music Workshop and is currently working with a local chamber music group.
