"Education either functions as an instrument which is used to facilitate integration of the younger generation into the logic of the present system and bring about conformity or it becomes the practice of freedom, the means by which men and women deal critically and creatively with reality and discover how to participate in the transformation of their world." - Paulo Freire

Bio

Julie Ellison Justice believes that teachers need to be activists for their students. A former middle school teacher herself, she was named the 1997 Teacher of the Year for South Brunswick Middle School in Brunswick County, North Carolina.

During her seven years of middle school teaching, she observed that some of her students were able to achieve a certain level of academic success without consistently understanding what they read. This discovery fueled her desire to pursue graduate studies in order to learn more about teaching reading and language arts.

She discovered that she could support those students in powerful ways by helping to train competent, exemplary teachers. Now an assistant professor of literacy, she educates pre-service teachers about language, literacy and schooling. In her work as a teacher educator, she encourages her students to become teachers who are both professionals and learners. Her goal is to prepare teachers who listen to their students, continue to learn about their craft and advocate for their students.
