| Bio |
Clinical Associate Professor Cheryl T. Horton is director of the UNC-Chapel Hill Teaching Fellows Program, a state-funded scholarship program for prospective teachers. The goal of the Teaching Fellows Program is to prepare new teachers for the real world of teaching while keeping alive their sense of mission and purpose. To this end, teachers must understand the politics of education, develop their own pedagogy, have a passion for learning and understand how to work effectively with others. The Teaching Fellows program hosts an annual conference ─ Let’s Talk RACE ─ where students and faculty from across the state focus on issues of equity in the schools. Horton also teaches science education methods courses to pre-service elementary and middle school teachers. Her diverse teaching background includes public school science experience on the elementary, middle and high school levels and at the university level as Middle Grades Program Coordinator for North Carolina Central University in Durham, North Carolina. In addition, Horton has been involved in several major organizations including the National Association of Research for Science Teachers, North Carolina Science Teachers Association, Association for Science Teacher Education and State Science Fair where she currently serves as judging coordinator. She has presented at various state and national science education conferences and reviewed grant proposals for the National Science Foundation. |
