Audrey L. Heining-Boynton is a professor of foreign language education and English as a second language. She has authored or co-authored textbooks, including the the middle school and high school Spanish program ¡En español!, the college Spanish program ¡Atrévete! and the elementary school content-based science text ¡Anímate!. Her research has been published widely in journals such as Modern Language Journal, Foreign Language Annals and Central States Reports, and she has delivered more than 200 papers, workshops and speeches nationally and internationally. She received nearly $4 million in grant funding to assist with the creation of foreign and second language programs in North and South Carolina, and with a goal to raise end-of-course reading and math test scores for nearly 2,000 limited English-proficient students, trained more than 200 classroom teachers under her leadership.
During the 2005 Year of Languages, Heining-Boynton served as president of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). She has also been president of the National Network for Early Language Learning, a vice president of the Michigan Foreign Language Association and a board member of the Foreign Language Association of North Carolina. Additionally, she served as the Foreign Language in the Elementary School (FLES) committee chair for the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP) and was an elected executive council member of ACTFL. Heining-Boynton won the 2003 ACTFL Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education, the 2005 Foreign Language of North Carolina (FLANC) Teacher of the Year Award and the 2004 University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ACCESS Award for Excellence in Working with LD and ADHD Students.
