Bio

Professor and coordinator of the Curriculum and Instruction Doctoral Program, Barbara Day teaches doctoral courses in supervision and research in curriculum and instruction. She previously coordinated the programs of Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education and Teaching and Learning and was director of the Teaching Fellows Program from 1989-99. She is a former teacher, principal and assistant superintendent of schools. She has authored numerous textbooks, including Early Childhood Education: Developmental/Experiential Teaching & Learning, 4th ed. and Good Schools for Young Children, 5th ed.

An advocate for women, in July 2006, Day was elected president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International for Key Women Educators. As 1994-96 president of Eta State, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, she spearheaded a drive for a new Women’s Executive Leadership Training Program. She also edited the book Education in the 21st Century. Key Issues: Leadership, Literacy, Legislation and Learning in 1985.

Day also founded UNC-Chapel Hill’s chapter of the Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society in Education and currently serves as counselor. She was president of the international Kappa Delta Pi Honor society from 1998-2000, and in 2005 the society created the Dr. Barbara Day Scholarship for Doctoral Students in Curriculum and Instruction in her honor. She also received a National Leadership Award in 2000 from the National Association of International Honor Societies. She edited the book, Teaching and Learning in the New Millennium in 2002.

Day served on two national organizations dedicated to improving education across the United States: She was a member of the Early Childhood Education Task Force of the National Association of State Boards of Education that produced the 1988 influential blueprint, Right From the Start;and she chaired a nationwide consortium of 13 school districts for the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development during her 1985 presidency.

A 1998 graduate of the Harvard Leadership Management Program, Day has won numerous professional awards and recognitions. She frequently serves as a keynote speaker for professional organizations, honor societies and curriculum study institutes in the United States and abroad.
