The goal of these curriculum materials is to provide a structure
for classrooms that are integrating iPads into their science
instruction.  In this section, we will map out how the interactive
teacher’s guide is structured as well as the materials contained
within the iTunesU course packet.  In this inquiry investigation,
students will utilize the Howard Hughes Earthviewer App and the
Puzzling Plates App to explore the formation of the Earth and
the movement of plates. Students will make predictions, collect
data in groups and then construct an argument about Plate
Tectonics.

In the first inquiry, Students will construct arguments about how
the Earth’s surface has changed over time based upon claims
and evidence collected during the inquiry. Students will explore
the formation of the Earth through the use of the Earthviewer.
Data will be presented in the KLEWS sheet.

In the second inquiry, students investigate the movement of the
Earth’s plates using the app Puzzling Plates. Using the app,
students will explore how the plates moved to form the crust of
the Earth. Students will construct arguments about how the
Earth’s surface has changed over time based upon claims and
evidence collected during the inquiry. Students will explore how
the tectonic plates of the Earth fit together and their names
through the use of the Puzzling Plates App - Level 1. Data will
be presented in the KLEWS sheet and students will make a
sketch of the location and names of each plate.

In the third inquiry, will construct arguments about areas of
activity or “hot spots” based upon claims and evidence collected
during the inquiry. Students will the location of these “hot spots”
through the use of the Puzzling Plates App - Level 2. Data will
be presented in the KLEWS sheet and students will make a
sketch of the location of these “hot spots” using the drawing
created in the previous activity. Additionally, students will make
observations about why these hot spots are occurring and the
type of land features that might emerge from them.
