Alumni Association
Committees
The Alumni Association has seven standing committees, listed below. The Alumni Association's bylaws provide that the Council may appoint additional or temporary committees as it deems necessary. Unless otherwise noted, each committee has a chair appointed annually by the President, with the approval of the Council. Each committee has at least four additional members appointed by the chair. The President is an ex-officio member of all committees but is not counted in computing the minimum number of members.

Executive Committee
Membership
As defined by the Association's bylaws, membership on the Executive Committee consists of the President, President-elect, Past President, Secretary, and Treasurer. Each of these officers has a two-year term, which begins on July 1 of each year. The election of officers takes place at the Annual Meeting of the Association and is conducted by written ballot.
Duties
President
- Represents the alumni to the School of Education
- Presides at all meetings of the Association, the Council, and the Executive Committee
- Appoints chairs of all committees, subject to council approval, except for Nominating and Finance
- Fills vacancies by appointment, with Council approval
President-Elect
- Acts as presiding officer of the Council in the absence of the President
- Participates in all meetings and deliberations of the Council and participates in the General Alumni Association meetings when called upon by the president
- Chairs the Nominating Committee
- Performs other duties as necessary
Past President
- Presides at meetings in absence of President and President-elect
- Chairs the Awards Committee
- Performs other duties as necessary
Secretary
- Keeps a record of the proceedings at all meetings of the Association, the Council, and the Executive Committee
- Receives the written resignations of any officer or member of the Nominating Committee
- Receives by February 1 of each year the names of all candidates for election from the Nominating Committee and presents these names to the Council
Treasurer
- Oversees the financial affairs of the Association, subject to the direction and approval of the Council
- Assists in the preparation of budgets with the Committee to be presented for approval to the Council and the Dean
- Works with the Alumni Relations staff in preparing reports to the Council
- Chairs the Finance Committee
Finance Committee
Membership
The Treasurer serves as chair of the Finance Committee, which is made up of two other alumni appointed by the Treasurer, with approval by the Council.
Duties
The Finance Committee performs an annual review of the Association’s budget, which has been prepared by the Treasurer. If approved, the budget is then forwarded to the Executive Committee for review. After approval from the Executive Committee, the Alumni Council reviews the budget for final approval. The Treasurer will file a report to the Association membership at the Annual Meeting.
Program Committee
Membership
The Chair of this Committee is appointed by the President of the Alumni Council. Members of this committee are appointed by the Committee Chair and must be approved by the council.
Duties
The purpose of the Program Committee is to assist in planning programs that reflect the interests of the alumni and the School of Education. The Program Committee is responsible for planning at least one annual alumni event.
Advancement Committee
Membership
The Council President appoints the Advancement Committee Chair, who selects the nine committee members. The nine selected members are then approved by the Council.
Duties
The purpose of the Advancement Committee is to assist in securing annual fund gifts to the School of Education Foundation from alumni and other constituencies. Committee members develop goals and participate in direct solicitations for gifts at the Dean’s Circle level and above.
Carolina Connection Committee
Membership
The Council President appoints the Chair of this Committee. The Chair then selects three committee members.
Duties
The Carolina Connection Committee is responsible for the following:
- Informing UNC-Chapel Hill alumni of important events within the School of Education and the educational community
- Gathering feedback from Carolina graduates on issues critical to the School and the educational community at large
- Promoting a spirit of fellowship and loyalty among alumni toward the School and the University
- Encouraging alumni support for the School’s advancement
Awards Committee
Membership
The Chair of this Committee is a Past President of the Council. The committee consists of nine members: two faculty members, five alumni (representing as many facets of the School of Education’s Alumni Association as possible), a representative appointed by the Dean, and the Alumni Relations officer.
Duties
The committee is responsible for selecting the recipients for the following:
- Distinguished Leadership Award recognizes exceptional service in furthering the mission and programs of the School of Education. The recipient of this award will have demonstrated exceptional leadership in advancing the opportunities related to education available to the School's community, including alumni, faculty and students.
- Alumni Achievement Award recognizes exceptional achievement of an alumnus/a who personifies the School of Education's commitment to support diverse and democratic communities in order to improve education in the state and nation for all children and the adults who care for them. Through exceptional accomplishments, this individual will have brought distinction to self and to this alma mater.
- Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes a recent graduate who has shown outstanding leadership and/or exceptional commitment to the education of children. The recipient of this award will personify the mission of the School of Education by emphasizing the interconnectedness of homes, schools, and communities through both professional and volunteer work.
- Peabody Award recognizes an outstanding individual who has made an extraordinary impact on the field of education. The person chosen for this award will have demonstrated a commitment to local education issues of the state of North Carolina and/or national issues and problems confronting education.
- Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes a teacher whose creativity and knowledge of a discipline have been expressed through the development of an innovative and compelling curriculum. The person chosen for this award will exemplify the qualities that the School of Education programs support in the art of teaching.
Eligibility
Recipients of the Peabody Award do not have to be faculty or graduates of the School of Education. Recipients of the other four awards may be alumni or faculty. No person shall be recommended for any of these awards while a candidate for public office.
Nominating Committee
Membership
The Chair of the Nominating Committee is the President-Elect, who appoints five members with the approval of the Council.
Duties
The Committee meets as necessary in the early winter to develop a slate of nominees to be presented to the Secretary of the Council prior to the April meeting. The committee has the charge of nominating one candidate for each of the vacancies occurring on the Council as the result of the expiration of terms of office. The slate of candidates is transmitted by the Committee to the Secretary of the Council by April 1 of each year.
