Albert Long, Jr. (A.B.Ed. '55) to be inducted into FCA Hall of Champions

Albert Long, Jr., a former Tar Heel star athlete and 1955 graduate of the School of the Education, was recently named to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Hall of Champions in recognition of his service to the organization.
Michael Brannigan (M.Ed. '03) named NYSSCA Counselor of the Year

Michael Brannigan, a 2003 graduate of the School’s M.Ed. program in school counseling, was named 2007 Counselor of the Year by the New York State School Counselor Association (NYSSCA). Brannigan currently is in his fifth year as a counselor at Queensbury Middle School in upstate New York.
School presents annual alumni awards

Five outstanding educators were recognized by the School of Education at its eighth annual alumni awards ceremony Oct. 27, 2007 at the George Watts Hill Alumni Center on the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill campus. Presiding at the ceremony were Mike Williams (A.B.Ed. ’67, Ed.D. ’92), president of the School of Education Alumni Association, and Ben Matthews (Ph.D. ’84), chair of the Alumni Awards Committee.

Melissa Hedt (A.B.Ed. '99) named NCASCD’s Outstanding Young Educator of the Year

Melissa Hedt, who received her baccalaureate degree in Middle Grades Education from the School of Education at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, was named Outstanding Young Educator of the Year by the North Carolina Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (NCASCD). She was honored at the NCASCD Annual Conference held in February in Pinehurst, N.C.
Frank Comfort (M.A.T. '69) retires, leaves behind winning record and SOE scholarship fund

Frank Comfort will retire June 30, 2007 after 30 years as head coach of the North Carolina swimming and diving team.
Comfort is the winningest coach in ACC history with 16 women's championships, 10 men's championships and 578 men’s and women’s career dual meet wins. He has won more dual meets than any other coach in college swimming history.
Phyllis Farlow (M.Ed. '05) named Phillips Middle School Student Support Person of the Year, Receives Carol Ambrosio Award for Leadership in Counseling

Phyllis Farlow, a 2005 graduate of the School’s M.Ed. program in School Counseling, recently received two recognitions from Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. She was named Student Support Person of the Year at Guy B. Phillips Middle School and received the 2007 Carol Ambrosio Award for Leadership.
Elson S. Floyd (A.B. '78, M.Ed. '82, Ph.D. '84) named 10th president of Washington State University

Effective May 21, 2007, Elson S. Floyd succeeded Lane Rawlins as the 10th president of Washington State University in Pullman, Wash. Formerly, Floyd served as president of the University of Missouri, the first African-American person to do so.

Shirley Pyon, who received her bachelor’s degree in elementary education and psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2000, was recently named the 2007-08 District Teacher of the Year for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. She teaches third grade at Scroggs Elementary.
Three alumni named Teachers of the Year

Several alumni were recently recognized by the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools district as the best in teaching at their respective schools. William (Bill) Melega (M.Ed. '05), Christina Royster (A.B.Ed. '97, M.Ed. '03) and Jennifer Sparrow (A.B.Ed. '81) have all been named 2007-08 Teachers of the Year.
Cindi Rigsbee (A.B.Ed. '79, M.Ed. '03) named Orange County Teacher of the Year

Cindi Rigsbee, a reading teacher at Gravelly Hill Middle School, was recently named Orange County School’s SunTrust Gold Star Award Teacher of the Year. Rigsbee has taught in Orange County for one year.
Tamara Davis (M.Ed. '87, A.B.Ed. '85) named Counselor Educator of the Year

Tamara Davis, a 1987 graduate of the School’s Master of Education program in School Counseling was recently named Counselor Educator of the Year by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA). She is an associate professor of psychology at Marymount University in Arlington, Va.
Tricia Cotham (M.S.A. '06) chosen to become North Carolina’s youngest legislator

Tricia Cotham, assistant principal at East Mecklenburg High School, has been chosen by Democratic Party officials in House District 100 to fill the N.C. House of Representatives seat vacated by former Speaker Jim Black. She received 23 of 32 votes, outpolling three other candidates.
Erin Denniston (M.Ed. '04) named a statewide finalist for national teaching award

Erin Denniston, a 2004 graduate of the School's Master of Education for Experienced Teachers program, has been named a state finalist for the 2006 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.
María Fraser-Molina (M.A.T. '86) receives National Instructional Leadership Award
