School Administration, M.S.A. Flex

Program Description


The Master of School Administration (M.S.A.) Flex (Off-Campus) Program was conceived as a way to provide an option for educational practitioners who were interested in pursuing careers in school administration but, for one reason or another, found it difficult to participate in the on-campus preparation program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as full time students.

The program is a cohort-based, distance learning version of the On-Campus M.S.A. As such, it operates under the same philosophy as the other elements of the School of Education’s Master of School Administration Program.

Since the M.S.A. Flex (Off-Campus) Program is designed to accommodate working professionals who aspire to serve as school building administrators, courses are conducted at sites away from campus, usually occur within concentrated time blocks of five to six weeks utilizing Wednesday afternoons and some Saturdays, and incorporate a variety of face to face meetings and online activities. Cohort groups begin the program in January and then take three courses a semester for a period of two and one-half years.


The home base for the next cohort that begins in January 2019 will be hosted by the Carolina Center for Educational Excellence (CCEE).

Students are selected on the basis of their academic preparation, professional experience and intellectual and leadership potential. An interview may be required.

MSA Admission Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
  • Unofficial transcripts from all colleges attended (official transcripts will be required upon acceptance into the program)
  • Two years of experience in a school setting (see Special Provisions for Teach for America applicants below)
  • Possess a state license/certificate (out of state candidates must obtain a NC license/certificate)
  • G.P.A. 3.0 or higher (3.2 preferred)
  • Resume
  • Three letters of recommendations (current or recent past supervisors that document administrative or similar leadership experience, preferably in a school setting, and potential success as a school leader)
  • Personal Statement (1-2 pages) The statement must address:
  • the School of Education’s Conceptual Framework and the Educational Leadership Department’s commitment to the pursuit of social justice and equity in public education; and

    an explanation as to how current or past work materially relates to the various standards to which administrator preparation programs are held in North Carolina .
