The focus of this specialty area is the K-12 Special Education: General Curriculum. Teachers who successfully complete the program requirements can earn both a M.Ed. and the recommendation for master's level licensure. Special Education: General Curriculum licensure requires passing tests as determined by the North Carolina Department of Education.

The program provides an interdisciplinary approach to the education of students with mild to moderate disabilities in inclusive K-12 learning environments. The program emphasizes working within the context of comprehensive, integrated, three-tiered models of intervention to support all learners. Students in this program will learn evidence-based strategies for students who need more than primary prevention efforts. The program addresses approaches for working with families and interdisciplinary professionals in meeting students' specialized learning needs.

Special Education: General Curriculum Add-on Licensure Only Option

Teachers who have an existing teaching license and would like to obtain additional licensure in Special Education: General Curriculum, without doing the additional course work required for a masters degree, may take special education specialty courses leading to licensure in this area. More information about this option can be found here . Application for admission to the Special Education: General Curriculum Add-On License program is made through the Master of Education for Experienced Teachers (MEDX) program and is included as a subsection of the Special Education Cohort.
