Welcome to the Special Needs Case Study Portfolio. The purpose of this case study is to prepare future teachers to work effectively with students with special needs in the regular classroom. The case study will help you learn to identify exceptional/at-risk students; identify their strengths and weaknesses; learn to modify instruction; and learn to make accommodations and modifications to ensure student success.
As the Clinical Instructor for Special Needs, I will provide instruction to each student teacher on the five parts of the case study. Parts 1, 2, and 3 will be completed in the fall semester and parts 4 and 5 in the spring.
Please be aware of the following information:
- Confidentiality: Do not use any student’s real name. Use a pseudonym and only use the child’s first name.
- Obtain parent permission before working with your selected student. This should be coordinated with the liaison person in your school or with your supervisor.
- Please ask for access for information such as the cumulative file from your cooperating teacher. If there is access to the child’s IEP (Individual Education Plan) or 504 plan, ask the coordinator for special needs or the 504 coordinator in your building for permission to view these records.
- Do not use IQ scores in your case study if you should have access to them.
- Add a cover sheet each time you submit a hard copy of a portion of the case study.
- Staple all pages with you name on each page. Please do not hand in loose or paper clipped papers as they could easily be misplaced or lost.
- Please hand in all papers on time to me. Points will be deducted for lateness. Anything marked as below satisfactory will need to be redone and resubmitted.
