Special Needs Case Study
This section contains information specific to the Elementary Education Program at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. To be eligible for graduation with a degree in Elementary Education, candidates must demonstrate knowledge of curriculum modifications, adaptations and legal issues related to working with children with special needs.
A case study will be completed during the senior year student teaching practicum. Each student teacher, working with his or her cooperating teacher, will select a student who has been identified as having a specific learning disability or who exhibits learning difficulties. The case study will focus on this student. Each of the five tasks below should be undertaken after reviewing and studying the content in the Special Needs, Special Teaching units associated with the task. The content will be addressed in class and workshop sessions.
An individual portfolio will be assembled based on the five tasks which comprise the case study. Each of the tasks will be assessed and grades will be assigned by the clinical instructor. The completed portfolio will be presented to fellow student teachers, cooperating teachers, university supervisors and the clinical instructor.
