  • Curricular leadership, organization and innovation
  • Technology in curriculum and instruction

The School of Education at UNC-Chapel Hill offers a unique professional doctorate. The goal of the degree is to prepare transformative educational leaders for the 21st century. It is a part-time or full-time campus-based program, designed for practicing professionals who become specialists in the preparation and implementation of reformed schooling practices. Potential professional leadership roles for graduates include: district and state curriculum directors; instructional supervisors in various school subjects; and professors/researchers in related areas such as teacher education

The Ed.D. is differentiated from the Ph.D. in a small core of unique courses and in two ‘practicums’, one in professional development and the other in a research apprenticeship. The program has two pathways, one a non-licensure doctorate and the other a Curriculum and Instruction Specialist License (consisting of 57 and 66 course and dissertation credit hours respectively). Guidance for admitted students is undertaken through an initial advisor and subsequent faculty committee members.
