Program Description

Overview

The program is committed to preparing early childhood professionals with skills to teach infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners with and without disabilities, and coordinate community based, inclusive services for young children and their families. Program strengths include a strong family-centered, inclusive and interdisciplinary conceptual base. All course work and field experiences incorporate the above dimensions. Courses are offered after school hours, usually from about 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. The program can be completed in 1-2 academic years depending on individual students' course needs based on a review of their transcripts.

Licensure

In North Carolina, the B-K License gives the individual teaching credentials to teach infants, toddlers, preschoolers and kindergartners with and without developmental disabilities. It is an inclusive teacher licensure with a focus on children with developmental delays as well as children who are typically developing. Individuals employed by the public schools are required to have a B-K license in order to teach in public school supported preschools or kindergartens. Also, individuals employed by many Head Start and infant/toddler programs or other programs contracted to provide services to very young children and their families are required to have their B-K licensure.

Admissions

An individual may be admitted to the B-K licensure only program if he or she holds a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution and completed his or her degree with a 2.5 GPA or higher.
