My background
I’m a small-town girl whose childhood benefited from a strong education background. Growing up in a household where my mother was an educator and my father a principal, I knew I wanted to be a teacher for as long as I can remember. More importantly, having two parents heavily involved in the teaching realm allowed me to understand both the positives and the negatives at work in today’s education system.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
In high school, I realized that many students who were struggling academically were not receiving the level of attention they needed and deserved. I chose the School of Education because I am committed to ensuring that all students enjoy a positive school experience regardless of their background. I believe that every child can succeed if provided with an appropriate learning environment.
My experience
As a recipient of the North Carolina Teaching Fellows Scholarship, I’ve had the opportunity to interact with a diverse set of students and faculty who share the goal of developing a well-rounded teacher population. In class, I’m free to discuss relevant educational issues with other future teachers who have exposed me to new concepts and ideas.
Student life
Carolina is a one-of-a-kind place. I am surrounded by such diversity and so many opportunities that I never experience a dull moment. Whether it’s walking by the Bell Tower on a sunny day or watching a basketball game in the Dean Dome, I often stop and think to myself, “Wow! I go to Carolina.”
In 10 years
In 10 years, I plan to be teaching language arts at the middle school level. Ideally, I will have earned my master’s degree in education and national board certification. I hope that I will exhibit as much as enthusiasm for education in my tenth year of teaching as in my first.
