Middle Grades Education
Class of 2009
Charlotte, North Carolina
My background
I grew up in Charlotte, N.C., and attended the area’s Catholic schools. I was involved in Student Council, Honor Court and numerous athletics.
Why I chose education
I have known that I wanted to be a teacher since a very young age. My grandmother, mother and aunt all taught at various levels and in different disciplines. I guess you could say that teaching is in my blood.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
I chose the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill because I was impressed by the academics and, of course, the athletics. Since I knew I wanted to be a teacher, the UNC School of Education with its reputation for excellence was an easy choice.
My experience
I love being a part of the Middle Grades program because of the smaller, more intimate class sizes, the professors and the service-learning aspects. In addition, I have enjoyed numerous opportunities to become involved with the School through the Collegiate Middle Level Association (CMLA), an on-campus student group focused specifically on Middle School teachers.
Student life
There is so much to see and do around Chapel Hill, whether it is hanging out with friends, attending a UNC football or basketball game or venturing onto Franklin Street or to Carrboro.
In 10 years
In 10 years, I simply hope to be teaching. At this point in my life, I am unsure where I want to teach or at what age level, but I do know I want to be a teacher. I hope to have enough experience so that I can inspire my students and meet the needs of students of all levels, abilities and interests. Additionally, I hope to continue to enhance my own learning and development and work to improve the field of education.
