My background
When I was growing up in Atlanta, Ga., I regularly pressured my younger brother into playing school with me. Now, in my final year at Carolina, I’m completing my field placement at Forest View Elementary School in Durham, N.C. where I teach third-grade history.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
When I first arrived at UNC-Chapel Hill, I was set to become a history major. But when I saw many of my friends pursuing a career in education my first-year, I experienced a longing feeling that prompted me to change my academic goals. I switched my major to elementary education, realizing that working with children is my calling. I’ve never looked back.
My experience
As a recipient of the Willie Hall Kennedy Scholarship, a merit-based annual award that supports a rising junior who has been admitted to a teacher education program, I’ve been able to enjoy my undergraduate experience in the School without having to worry about the financial stress that comes with paying for a college education. The fact that the scholarship is only offered to rising juniors in the School of Education represents an amazing opportunity for other students like me.
The future
Upon graduation in the spring, I look forward to entering the classroom as a licensed educator. In a few years, I plan to return to what will then be my alma mater to earn a master’s degree in education.
