My background

I have taught in the early childhood development field since 1984.  In 2001, I relocated to Carrboro, N.C. I completed the Birth-Kindergarten Licensure Only program in 2004 and my Master of Education for Experienced Teachers degree in Early Childhood Intervention and Family Support in 2007. I currently teach in Orange County in a Head Start and a More at Four classroom. I am also the mother of two boys.

Why I chose education

My undergraduate degree is in Human Development and Family Services. In 1986, I taught Head Start in Colorado and loved it. While I was there, I became involved in National Association for the Education of Young Children and my love for the profession grew. I have taught in seven different states in the United States, and each experience has added to my joy of teaching young children. When I arrived in North Carolina, I wanted nothing more than to return to Head Start so I began the process of completing my B-K license.

Why I chose the UNC School of Education

The program was very convenient for me in travel distance and classroom hours. While a student at the School of Education, I continued to work full-time at my job without any difficulties.

My experience

My experience has been fantastic. I have grown immensely in my profession through the courses taught and through networking in the School of Education.

Student life

I am married and have a home life so I did not spend lots of time on campus. I really enjoyed my classroom relationships with the UNC students.

My inspiration

Dr. Harriet Boone, Dr. Sharon Palsha and Dr. Kathleen Cranley Gallagher have all inspired me through my education at the UNC School of Education. Their spirit and love of early childhood teaching are very uplifting and exciting.

Scholarships and fellowships received

The T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship from Child Care Services Association of North Carolina funded my B-K license. I was fortunate to receive the Social Inclusion Grant from the School of Education, which helped fund my master’s degree.

In 10 years

I hope to be doing exactly what I am doing today but only better as I work hard to maintain a proficient and up-to-date, researched-based classroom.
