My background
I have been working as an applications programmer specialist at UNC-Chapel Hill for the past 16 years. Prior to my work experience, I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology. I am married with three children, ages 6, 10 and 13.
Why I chose education
I have been teaching adolescents in Sunday School and coaching children in basketball, baseball and football for more than 10 years. Teaching has been and continues to be one of my greatest joys in life. I recently thought to myself, “Why not do this for a living?” I truly believe that teachers not only help children learn, but they can positively influence and contribute to children’s lives in ways that are not possible in any other profession.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
I attended an information session at the School of Education in the spring of 2007. The speakers were not only informative but inspiring as well. I talked to a current Middle Grades student after the session and became convinced that the School’s Middle Grades program would meet my needs perfectly.
My experience
Right from the start, the students in the Middle Grades program formed a small, cohesive community. I attribute this sense of community to the faculty and leaders of the Middle Grades program. Beyond their knowledge and experience in the field, they have created a friendly atmosphere that motivates students to learn and help each other to become excellent teachers. My cohort is tremendous, and it seems that we all share the same passion for teaching.
My inspiration
My father has always been my source of inspiration as he taught for 33 years. There were times growing up when former students would seek him out to talk. I believe that my father made a difference in many lives, and I hope to do the same.
In 10 years
I hope to be teaching in a classroom as well as coaching on a court or field. Most importantly, I hope to make positive and motivational contributions to the lives of the students and athletes who cross my path.
