My background

I received my undergraduate degree in communications and worked for two years as the program director at a local gym for children.  However, I found myself wanting to connect more deeply with children and their families, and I decided to pursue a career in education.

Why I chose education

During my work at the gym, I loved coaching and teaching children gymnastics, but I wanted to be more involved and make a difference in their lives.  I felt that teaching was the profession that would allow me to make such a difference.

Why I chose the UNC School of Education

The University’s School of Education has an excellent reputation, building on the assets of its experienced faculty. Additionally, the BKLO program met my needs perfectly because the classes were offered in the evening, allowing me to continue working until I began student teaching.

My experience

My classmates were friendly, engaging people who shared my desire and passion to educate young children.  More importantly, my professional development as a new teacher was enhanced by the faculty’s many years of diverse experience. I felt that the faculty was very supportive of the students, wanting us to succeed and pushing us to do so.

On teaching

Every day when I wake up, I am excited to get to school and begin a new day with my students. Although each day presents its own challenges, I love seeing the growth my students make, both socially and academically.

My inspiration

A member of the faculty made me want to become the best educator I could. She always was supportive and positive about every situation, especially student teaching. This faculty member worked with me and encouraged me to find the teaching position that would be the best match for me. Even now, she continues to be my support in the classroom.

In 10 years

In 10 years, I will be in education, supporting my students and their families.
