John Wheeler
Ed.D. in Educational Leadership
Class of 2010
Yorktown, Virginia
My background
I received a bachelor's degree in education from East Carolina University in 1996 before starting my teaching career in my hometown of Yorktown, Va. After teaching for a few years and graduating with a master's degree from The College of William and Mary, I accepted a middle school assistant principal position in 2001. Three years later, I relocated to North Carolina to become assistant principal at Cedar Ridge High School in Hillsborough, N.C.
Why I chose education
I initially had a hard time choosing a major. After observing my mother teach over spring break of my sophomore year in college, I was hooked. The way she motivated and connected with her students is something I'll never forget.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Education has an outstanding reputation for having some of the most respected faculty members in the field of education across the country. I was in the process of applying to graduate schools when I had a conversation with an assistant superintendent who had recently completed her doctoral program. When I told her the schools I was considering, she said UNC was the best place to be.
My experience
The graduate students that I have met are some of the finest people I have ever known. The professors and staff are simply the best. They are energetic, intelligent and share a passion for educational leadership.
Student life
Carolina's campus is stunning. From the beautiful buildings and phenomenal professors, to the Old Well and Kenan Stadium, one would be hard-pressed to find a better overall environment.
My inspiration
I can honestly say that each professor that I have worked with at Carolina has had an amazing impact on me. Throughout my career, I have worked with many remarkable colleagues. However, my inspiration to become an educator began with my mother.
Scholarships and fellowships received
In fall 2008, I received the Patrick W. and Joanne R. Carlton Award for Dissertation Research in Educational Leadership. This award has provided the resources needed to support the data collection process for my dissertation.
In 10 years
In 10 years, I hope to be in an educational leadership position making a positive impact in the lives of our students, teachers and community.
