Roxanne Muniz
Master of Arts in Teaching
Class of 2004
Bayamon, Puerto Rico
My background
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico. At age 17, I moved to New York to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where I received a bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. However, after a summer of teaching underprivileged students in Washington, D.C., I realized that teaching was my passion.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
Coming from a non-teaching background, I had many questions and concerns about the requirements and curriculum for an education program. The personal attention and advice that I received while applying was exceptional. When the director of the program, Dr. Carol Malloy, personally called me to tell me that I was accepted, I knew that this is where I belonged. You won’t find that kind of personal attention anywhere else.
My experience
The M.A.T program was the best year of my life. I met my best friends in this program and found my true passion. The professors here are fun, inspiring and great mentors. After completing the program, I truly felt prepared for the challenges of teaching.
Student Life
UNC’s campus is full of life. The weather is perfect and the location is great. There is so much to see and do here. I fell in love with Carolina my first weekend in town.
In 10 years…
In 10 years, I hope to be teaching in the M.A.T program at UNC, after completing a Ph.D. program in education.
