Courtney George
Ph.D. in Education; Culture, Curriculum and Change
Class of 2008
Ashland, Oregon
My background
I received my undergraduate degree in Spanish from the University of Oregon. In the spring of 1998, I moved to Asheville, N.C. and taught English as a Second Language for four years. Working with Mexican-immigrant students and their families transformed me and created within me a deep desire to work for change and social justice in the public schools.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
I chose Carolina’s School of Education because of its commitment to social justice and equity in public schools.
My experience
The Culture, Curriculum and Change program has allowed me to grow as a teacher and as a scholar. I have enjoyed the ability to create a program that meets my individual needs and passions. I have also found a community of supportive professors and friends.
Student Life
My personal experience as a student has been extremely positive. As a cohort member, I have been able to learn from, and with, my peers. We have helped each other learn the content and theory in our classes, but more importantly, we have learned from each others diverse backgrounds and experiences.
In 10 years…
In 10 years, I hope to be working as a professor of education at a teaching university. I also hope to be connected to the public schools and community so that I can prepare future teachers for real classrooms.
