Master of Arts in Teaching
Class of 2008
Currently: Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Formerly: Woodbury, New Jersey
My background
I received my bachelor's degree in English from LeMoyne College in Syracuse, N.Y. During my undergraduate days, I had the opportunity to study for a year at the University of Madrid where I acquired a love for the Spanish language, people and culture. I used my international experience for many years as an international marketing executive.
Why I chose education
In 2005, I retired from business and looked for my next challenge. I was not ready to really retire, and I had always thought about becoming a teacher. I believe that our global economic and political environment requires that today's students learn to speak a foreign language. So I decided to become a Spanish teacher.
Why I chose the UNC School of Education
Since I am a resident of Chapel Hill, the choice was simple. UNC-Chapel has one of the most highly regarded schools of education in the United States and it happens to be located right in my back yard. I feel very fortunate to have such a good school so close to where I live.
My experience
The M.A.T. program has provided me with thorough preparation for my work as a teacher. It is an intensive course with challenging expectations and a brisk schedule. The combination of my classes and my student teaching experience has given me confidence that I can succeed in my new career.
Student life
I have enjoyed being back on campus and getting to know so many interesting young people. I could be their mom but that doesn't matter. We are all students and we all support each other.
In 10 years
Life has taught me not to look too far ahead because you never know what opportunity might come your way in the meantime. For now, I look forward to starting my work as a middle school Spanish teacher in Chapel Hill.
