Overview
Welcome to the Human Development and Psychological Studies (HDPS) Area. I hope this site will provide an interesting overview of the faculty and the exciting work they do! As you will learn, the program area has an interdisciplinary focus directed toward generating and applying research to promote children’s development, learning, and mental health from infancy through early adulthood. Our program area is an excellent place to learn, do research and receive graduate training.
The Human Development and Psychological Studies area offers master’s and doctoral degrees in:
Although the area is divided into multiple programs, faculties and students are committed to studying fundamental issues related to development, academic achievement, literacy, school adjustment, children and youth at risk and children with disabilities.
Graduates of our programs also receive strong training in measurement and assessment, as well as quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. Our faculties are nationally known scholars in their field and collaborate on research projects across program areas and with researchers at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, the Center for Developmental Science, the National Research Center for Rural Education Support, the School of Social Work and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction. Both master’s and doctoral students alike are distinguished by their abilities to conduct or apply research to enhance children’s development and learning in school or community settings.
