Culture, Curriculum and Change
Overview
Culture, Curriculum and Change is a research area within our Ph.D. and M.A. programs in Education. The faculty members in this area are particularly committed to social justice and educational reform in their research, teaching, and service.
Our faculty is comprised of tenured and tenure-track professors at all ranks who hold national and international reputations. They publish in top tier journals and with leading publishers. They occupy leadership positions across the education academy. Their individual research interests are listed in Faculty & Research.
Graduate students who come to study in Culture, Curriculum and Change pursue M. A. and Ph.D. degrees typically in preparation for the professorate, positions in public service and activism. Our students establish an area of specialization through their course work and professional development experiences, including research, thesis/dissertation and other writing. The following areas of specialization are among those pursued by our students:
- Social, cultural and educational foundations that incorporate disciplinary and interdisciplinary work in history, philosophy, sociology, cultural studies and multicultural education
- Teacher education that includes curriculum studies, preparation of teachers (typically K-12) and teacher education program development
- School subjects research that focuses on English, English-language learning, mathematics, natural sciences, social studies, technology and arts
- Social issues and multidisciplinary topics such as immigration, new literacies and race theory from various "critical" perspectives
- Research and evaluation methodologies that emphasize qualitative designs and practices with some attention to mixed methods
